Strengthening skills and partnerships: OVO visits SMS’s National Training Academy

SMS recently welcomed members of the OVO team to its industry-leading dual fuel Training Academy in Bolton.

As one of the UK’s largest energy suppliers, OVO shares SMS’s commitment to a smarter, more sustainable energy future. Led by Nikki Cox, Simon Clarke, and Lucy Curtis, the visit offered a hands-on introduction to how SMS is investing in the skills and careers of the future.

From meter installation to precision soldering, the OVO visitors took part in a range of interactive training experiences – demonstrating the real-world techniques that underpin SMS’s rigorous engineer training programmes.

The session showcased not only the high standards of our training but also the culture of shared learning and technical excellence that defines SMS’s approach to workforce development.

Training for the future

The Bolton facility – recently featured in our new virtual tour – serves as the national skills development centre for SMS’s growing engineering workforce. Every engineer is trained to the highest safety and technical standards, supporting the delivery of the Government’s Smart Meter Rollout across UK homes and businesses.

Alongside in-house training, the Academy offers accredited gas and electrical courses for both new entrants and experienced professionals, with blended learning, hands-on modules, and guaranteed work placements available.

The visit marks another milestone in the growing relationship between SMS and OVO, highlighting a shared commitment to skills development, technical innovation, and the future of the energy industry.
