Our journey: 30 years of transformation

On 16 June 1995, SMS was founded with a clear vision: to put people at the centre of the UK’s smart energy future and to lead the smart energy revolution.

From those early beginnings, we’ve grown into one of the UK’s leading providers of energy infrastructure. Our journey has been shaped by the changing needs of the energy system – and by a consistent focus on delivering long-term value for our customers.

In 2024, SMS joined forces with Horizon Energy Infrastructure and Smart Meter Assets – creating a Group that now manages over 7.5 million meters nationwide, including more than 6.5 million smart and advanced devices. But our work goes far beyond metering.

Our vision for tomorrow

Our 30th anniversary comes at an exciting point in our journey.

Through the combination with Horizon and SMA, we’ve expanded into new markets and adjacent sectors, including Germany’s metering landscape and the UK’s water infrastructure. These opportunities position us to further support the UK’s transition to smarter, integrated utility systems.

At the same time, we are investing in smart energy technologies. Through Horizon Energy Ventures and Metis, we’re developing the solutions needed to support a more flexible, distributed energy system – from behind-the-meter infrastructure to energy storage and smart asset control.

Looking ahead, our focus remains firmly on delivering our Net Zero 2030 commitment. With strong technical foundations, trusted partnerships, and a clear strategic direction, we are ready to help shape the energy systems of tomorrow.

Our ambition is simple: to be more than a metering provider – to be a long-term partner in the UK’s energy transition.
