SMS Launches Virtual Tour of National Training Academy

Summary

SMS has introduced a new 360-degree virtual tour of its national Training Academy in Bolton, providing an interactive view of one of the UK’s most advanced dual-fuel engineering training facilities.

The Academy plays a central role in supporting the Government’s Smart Meter Rollout, delivering accredited training to both SMS engineers and the wider industry. By showcasing specialist environments such as the Alt HAN lab, mock street, and RTS Test Lab, the virtual tour offers stakeholders a clearer understanding of how SMS builds technical expertise and promotes workforce readiness for the UK’s Net Zero transition.

Setting the Standard for Technical Training in the Energy Sector

SMS has launched a 360-degree virtual tour of its Bolton-based Training Academy, offering an interactive view inside one of the UK’s most advanced centres for dual-fuel engineering training.

The new digital experience showcases key areas of the facility, including the Alt HAN test lab, Gas and Electric stage training zones, RTS Test Lab, and a full-scale mock street designed for realistic, hands-on instruction. These environments are used to train engineers to the highest industry standards, reflecting SMS’s safety-first culture and its role in delivering critical national infrastructure.

Developing Skills for the Smart Energy Rollout

The Training Academy serves as the skills development centre for SMS’s nationwide engineering workforce, supporting the Government’s Smart Meter Rollout across homes and businesses throughout Britain.

Engineers are trained to meet rigorous technical and safety standards, ensuring consistency, reliability, and compliance across all field operations. The Academy’s role in workforce readiness has become increasingly important as the energy sector evolves toward more intelligent, distributed systems.

In addition to internal training, the facility is open to the public and offers accredited courses for both new entrants and experienced engineers. These programmes cover domestic and commercial gas and electric systems, smart metering, EV chargepoint installation, and more – all delivered by highly experienced trainers through a blended model that combines in-person, online, and practical learning.

Enhancing Access and Engagement

By introducing a virtual tour, SMS has made it easier for future trainees, partners, and industry stakeholders to explore the scale and quality of the facility remotely.

The tour’s launch supports greater engagement with the Academy’s offering and provides a transparent, accessible view of the environment where technical expertise is developed. It also reflects SMS’s broader commitment to sustainability, reducing the need for site visits while maintaining high levels of visibility and engagement.
