Metis by SMS shortlisted for 2025 Utility Week Awards

Summary
Metis by SMS and Oxfordshire County Council have been shortlisted for the Net Zero Engagement Award at the 2025 Utility Week Awards. Their partnership has been recognised for the impact of the Energy Saver App – a digital engagement tool helping thousands of households understand their energy use, adopt renewable technologies, and cut their carbon emissions. This nomination highlights how partnership-led innovation is driving measurable behaviour change in support of the UK’s net zero ambitions.
Recognising innovation in net zero engagement
The 2025 Utility Week Awards celebrate organisations that are helping consumers across the UK use less energy and live more sustainably. Metis by SMS and Oxfordshire County Council have been shortlisted in the Net Zero Engagement Award category thanks to the success of the Energy Saver App, which has helped thousands of Oxfordshire residents optimise their energy use and explore renewable options.
The app connects directly to smart meter data, giving residents real-time visibility of their energy use and tailored advice on how to cut their consumption and costs, as well as helping to identify homes suited for renewable upgrades, such as Metis’s fully-funded solar PV and battery storage solutions. More than 9,000 people now use the app, with thousands acting on its insights to lower their bills and carbon emissions.
Tom Woolley, Smart Product and Strategy Director at SMS said:
Our partnership with Oxfordshire County Council shows that the technology and funding are no longer the barriers to Net Zero. We are delivering a fully-funded, data-driven solution that provides meaningful engagement and clear results across both private and social housing. With this model, there are simply no more excuses for leaving pockets of the population behind on the path to a sustainable future.
Powering community decarbonisation
The Energy Saver App is just one of the ways that Metis and Oxfordshire County Council’s partnership is delivering one of the UK’s most successful local decarbonisation programmes. So far, Metis has completed over 200 solar PV and battery installations in Oxfordshire, generating more than 120 MWh of clean power and saving participating homeowners an average of £375 every year.
This collaboration demonstrates how councils, technology providers, and energy experts can work together to make renewable energy adoption easier, more affordable, and more effective at scale.
Supporting households with renewable solutions
Metis has proven the blueprint for retrofit at scale – a fully funded, data-driven model that makes the energy transition accessible to everyone. By combining smart technology, behavioural insight, and local collaboration, we’re helping households cut costs and carbon while improving comfort and control.
Our inclusive solution serves both private homes and social housing, breaking down financial and informational barriers that have long left the squeezed middle behind. There are no excuses for exclusion – Metis is proving that net zero can be inclusive, practical, and affordable.
Being named a finalist for the 2025 Utility Week Awards reflects growing recognition that collaboration between industry, government, and innovators is key to delivering net zero at scale.
